Jonathan Herbert
Liminal Alchemy
About the Artist
Jonathan Herbert is a New York based artist whose five-decade career explores transformation shaped by extreme life events. Once recognized within the American art canon, he withdrew from public view in 1999 following his wife’s terminal illness, remaining largely unseen for decades. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston under CoBrA painter Jan Cox. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, photography, and digital media, with works held in major archives and institutional collections, reflecting a life shaped by brilliance, adversity, and reinvention.
About the Exhibition
Liminal Alchemy presents a body of work that fuses material innovation with spiritual inquiry. Using proprietary acrylic-urethane systems with metallic and interference pigments, the paintings shift with light and movement, existing in constant visual flux. Rooted in Kabbalah and psychological transformation, the work explores cycles of collapse and renewal, inviting heightened perception. Developed through personal trials, these works act as both artifacts of survival and meditative portals into unseen forces shaping reality.
