Drawing and painting have been a part of Peter Christ’s life from his early childhood in Buffalo, New York. He attended Syracuse University as a liberal arts major. Within a year, he was taking classes in both the art school and the school of architecture. He soon found his love for the visual arts overwhelming, and before he knew it, his portfolio was accepted at Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. While a student, he was able to study painting for a semester overseas at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London and finished the semester’s studies in Paris. Traveling throughout Europe provided him with numerous broadening experiences. Among his teachers, he remembers the painter Jerome Witkin particularly.

While living in New York (Soho), he continued to paint and work as a creative director for advertising. Each discipline fed the other. While working by day, he pursued a master’s degree at NYU with emphasis on video production and painting at night. He particularly recalls a painting teacher who was challenging and encouraging, Pop artist Idelle Weber.

Upon moving to Sarasota, he joined the list of artists represented by Art Uptown Gallery, and GAZE Modern Gallery. Although his paintings have been called representational, they are planned and constructed in ways that recall the works of abstract expressionists and modernists. Peter Christ’s blends the fading imagery of 1950’s North American signage, typography, toys, and everyday objects, with the sensual qualities of animals and the natural landscape, which inevitably appeals to a sense of humor.
